Great CityGames and Great Manchester Run 2016

This is a busy weekend for sport in Manchester. With the Great CityGames, Junior and Mini Manchester Run and the Great Manchester Run all packed into one weekend. Athletes from all over the world will be coming together in Manchester to compete in the lead up to the Olympics in Rio.

The Great CityGames, which have traditionally been held on a Saturday in previous years, have been moved to Friday 20th May. The event starts with the women’s pole vault from 16.45 and other races follow later with the women’s and men’s 100m and 200m.

This year Junior and Mini Great Manchester Run falls on Saturday 21st May followed by The Great Manchester Run on Sunday 22nd May. The Great Manchester Run is broadcast live on the BBC from 11am.

The route for the Great Manchester Run takes the runners past many iconic tourist sites such as the Imperial War Museum, Manchester United’s home ground, Old Trafford and The Lowry.

The elite wheelchair race starts at 10.55.
The elite women’s race starts at 11.12.
The elite men’s race starts at 11.37.

Other participants including many well known celebrities will also be taking part in the Great Manchester Run to raise money for many different charities, including Bloodwise; the UK’s biggest blood cancer charity and the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital.

Some of the celebrities taking part include Jack P Shepherd (David Platt – Coronation Street) running for The Kirsty Club, Tina O’Brien (Sarah-Louise Platt – Coronation Street) and Faye Brookes (Kate Connor – Coronation Street) both running for the Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital, Eden Taylor-Draper (Belle Dingle – Emmerdale) and George Rainsford (Ethan Hardy – Casualty) both running for Bloodwise.
